Simple Concentration Tip #1
Here's the most effect strategies in maintaining strategies from maintaining your concentration. I call it, 'be here now', 'technique', it's pretty simple. If you find your attention strain from what's happening. Simply repeat to yourself 'be here now'. This will help you to re-establish your concentration to the present moment. You may have to do this hundreds of times in an average week, just keep trying and be patient and you will see improvement. Hope you all really enjoy this technique and it works for you.
This coming week is the buddy week at the school and we look forward to meeting anyone who you would like to introduce to the academy.

Instructor's Corner
If You Could…
By Luke Morris
Black Belt, Certified Instructor
Have you ever caught yourself thinking “I can’t do that”? If so, you’ve probably found this a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you truly believe before you begin something that you will be unable to accomplish your goal, do you dedicate yourself to it and give your all towards its attainment? It’s unlikely.
Henry Ford summed up this phenomenon in a profound way:
“Whether you think you can do something or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”
This doesn’t mean that believing in yourself or “thinking you can” is all it takes to succeed, or even that giving your all will necessarily bring you to your goal. There are no guarantees in life. But believing you can’t will virtually guarantee failure.
Think about this in terms of your training. As long as you believe that a certain technique is too complicated to master, you’ll never get it. You’ll hold yourself back to match your expectations for yourself. True, keeping this low standard means you’ll never be disappointed in your performance, but it also means you’ll never push yourself to the level of which you’re truly capable.
On the other hand, if you open up your mind to the possibility that you can master the technique, you will discover resources you didn’t know you had, and you will find yourself approaching the perfection you seek. High standards mean high rewards.
Think about it: What would you do if you knew you could not fail? That is what you must set as your standard, and accept nothing from yourself that does not keep you on the path to that end.
Now is the time to throw off the old limiting beliefs. Inside every martial artist is a better martial artist fighting to get out. So let it out! Set your sights high, choose your goal carefully, and go for it. You won’t know what you can’t do until you’ve given it all you have.

More thoughts on Mastery...
By Dion Riccardo (Thought I would share this this article by my instructor). It is really great!
Do you find it hard for you to STICK with something for long periods of time?
Over the years, I found there are several types of students that have trouble getting the results they want in attaining the skill level they desire and oftentimes it spills over into their everyday life.
Here are common attitudes towards attempting to master new skills or challenges in the guise of three personas. These character types are to some extent caricatures, but if you think about, you may find within yourself one of them. Which one best describes you?
A Master has carefully chosen the things he/she wants to pursue and FULLY commits to the lifetime commitment of MASTERY.
"A Black belt is a white belt that never quit"
In closing, the Master is always a student. But, there comes a point where a master looks more at creating than external information.
When a student has master the Fundamentals of his/ her skill, they now begin to personalize it and create from it. Thus, the skill becomes them - their art - their style.
There is always the temptation to learn more from external sources (the new whiz bang popular thing out there) but it usually is a distraction to the person on the path of mastery. He/she focuses on the fundamentals of what they have been taught and then internally DISCOVERS areas within it!
Be careful, with the idea of chasing the next "Big Thing". When you uproot a plant and keep replanting it takes 10 times the amount of time to grow and will stunt your growth in becoming a master.
*** I want to thank Ms. Clark and all of our CIT Members who help the school so much. No one can ask for a more DIVERSE, CAPABLE team. I appreciate you carrying out the Vision and legacy.

Here are common attitudes towards attempting to master new skills or challenges in the guise of three personas. These character types are to some extent caricatures, but if you think about, you may find within yourself one of them. Which one best describes you?
- The Dabbler, who approaches each new sport, hobby, job opportunity or relationship with enthusiam, but loses interest once initial progress slows or a setback is encountered. Then it is on to the next interest.
- The Obsessive, who is intensely goal-oriented and results-focused, and pursues mastery with intensity and dogged persistence, making rapid initial progress. When setbacks are encountered, the Obsessive redoubles the effort and pushes forward without mercy. But because this cannot be sustained, ultimately the crash comes and burnout follows.
- The Hacker, who is much more laid back about learning new things than the Dabbler or Obsessive, and is content to stay on the plateau indefinitely, just “hanging out” in a certain comfort zone. The Hacker does avoid getting frustrated, but at the same time is unwilling to invest real effort and hard work in the practice, never pushing, and never really progressing.
A Master has carefully chosen the things he/she wants to pursue and FULLY commits to the lifetime commitment of MASTERY.

Thougths on Quote from BJJ greats Renzo Gracie and Royler Gracie.
"The essential idea behind Brazilian jiu-jitsu's answer to the fundamental problem of the martial arts is this: You must constantly strive to put yourself in a position where you can control your opponent as much as possible. Thus allowing you to do maximal damage to him while exposing yourself to as little potential damage as possible."
First let me say that this is said about a self-defense situation and not about just a match. One should always be careful about injuring someone else and using a reasonable level of force to defend yourself. Putting this aside, the question becomes how do you control someone who is bigger and stronger than you? The answer is by being able to work with the persons movement and force while using force on them in the most effective way possible. To this martial artists must use the laws of physics to their advantage. Here is one way to accomplish that. I hope to give some more in following weeks on our blog.
Don't be their when some goes to apply force to you. Traditional called only defend an unassailable position. For example, when someone goes to push you off the mount position, swim your arms through their push. This make the surface they are pushing on disappear. One of the mistakes I see people make with a move like this is to push the other persons arms out of the way. This makes it possible for the other person to resist or assail you back. Try to perform the move without touching their arms at all. While I do think that using you must waste energy because it is the best option at this point in the match the goal should be to avoid it at all costs because it only makes you vulnerable to the other person's counter attack.
Next lets look at the idea of constantly striving. This means working to always be in an unassailable position. For example, if the attacker cuts the angle for a jab or steps to the weak angle of a stance for a throw, you must move and adjust to make that attack ineffective. This is why you see BJJ expert level players always moving and adjusting their posture, position, and control to make any attack ineffective. By the way this is totally different than just moving away or out of range. The idea is to blend this strategy with the ability to always be in position to attack an indefensible position.
So here is how to work this into your training. First commit to working towards always being in an unassailable position. Forgot winning. Lose more to gain skill in this vital area. Second, when you do get attacked and you see the other person had the position to attack effectively consider how you got into an assailable position. Usually, at this time we think, ok how do I get out of this attack or defend this attack". That is good to work on, but really it is already to late to work on being unassailable. Students spend years getting good at defending attacks and very little time putting effort into understanding how not to get attacked at all. This is why it is important to tap early and often. This gives you more time to fix the error that made it possible to attack you in the first place.
watch how easy it is to defeat a strong opponent.

Keep track of the times you had a breakdown/you were attacked by others or just life and general. Then at the end of the day come up with a way to make that impossible in the future. Try this for the next week. You might make it a permanent habit. I know it makes a big difference for me.

News & Upcoming Events:
Why does Discipline and Self-control work one day then not the next?
Understand this and you will change the way you use authority over your children.
I wrote this because of the many times I read about Discipline and Self-Control I only see one side of a two sided coin talked about.
Lets say your son or daughter will not go to bed. You ask and they say, "No way I have to finish this level on my video game." So you already know how to simply turn the TV off and help (pick them up) them up stairs. This can work well if you don't react to what they do or say and if you are consistent.
OK, so this is the first way and everyone should know about this already. But this should make you wonder about those kids who always seem happy to obey their parents. What in the world are they doing? Do you think they are really just gritting their teeth and exercising their self-control and discipline. My guess is NO!
So here is a second kind of authority or discipline. They are commanding obedance through serves. This is they way a great leader helps others. They serve them lovingly and with a joyfull heart. They help them meet their own needs and grow and in return the other person can't wait to be of serve back. This doesn't happen over night and the first type of discipline is still needed, but it is they way that works at 2 and 22 years old.
OK so how do you use this for your child. First ask yourself what is you level or rapport with your child. This will determine if your child wants to please you.
Grade yourself on the following quiz.
Answer T or F
My Child...
Doesn't act like they missed me when I come home.
Acts disgusted when I ask them to do simple things.
Only listens when I yell.
Constantly speaks disrespectfully to me.
Feels like they can do nothing right in my eyes.
Is secretive around me.
Accuses me of not listening.
Tells others they can't talk with me.
I don't enjoy my childs company.
I feel burned as a parent.
Scoring

Scoring
0-1 True - Great work
2-4 True - Needs a little work
5+ True - Get to work
Here are some tips to help raise your score.
1. Say I love you
2. Show you love them
3. Keep your promises
4. Play together
5. Spead time together
6. Pray together
7. Have regular family meetings
8. Know their relating style (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic)
If you thought that this helped you, please comment on our Facebook Fan page, I eagerly await your comments....
==============================
Weekly Challenge: Do three things this week to develop more rapport with the ones you love and see if you can command obedience this way.
P.S. If this isn't working right away give it time. It will and double down your efforts.

Thought our students might enjoy this article from one of my top MMA coaches Dion Riccardo.
Why You Feel So Up & Down about Your Training.
If I only had one thing left to say about martial arts training - this would be it!
I wrote this because I have had so many discussions with students and instructors over the last several weeks and it has become my focus to drive this message home
Let me start of by saying that in my over 27 years training in the martial arts there has been many times I felt good & bad about my progress.
There is a reason for that, so let me explain...
Learning any new skill involves relatively brief spurts of progress, each of which is followed by a slight decline to a plateau somewhat higher in most cases than that which preceded it…the upward spurts vary; the plateaus have their own dips and rises along the way…
To take the master’s journey, you have to practice diligently, striving to hone your skills, to attain new levels of competence. But while doing so–and this is the inexorable–fact of the journey–you also have to be willing to spend most of your time on a plateau, to keep practicing even when you seem to be getting nowhere.
Notice in the diagram below, that the overall trend is upward in skill proficiency, however the plateau is the periods when you feel "down".
Important to see here is that if you would quit at the first plateau, there would be no growth.
Also, Right after the period of plateau there is a SPIKE in skill level!
This fact of devoting much of your time on plateaus or even backsliding may be frustrating or dispiriting if you are hellbent on bottom-line progress.
But the person on the path of mastery not only acknowledges the plateau, he embraces it and learns to love “practice” for its own sake and rewards. I think this advice can be of great help to those of us struggling with plateaus in the effort to get fit, lose weight, or advance mma training, kickboxing or grappling skills.
Mastery is not about reaching perfection, but rather comes from maintaining a particular mindset as you move along the path of improvement in building your skills or overcoming challenges in any endeavor.
I will try to write more on this subject and give you more insight on the "Mindset" we need to have about our training and how it will crossover and help in our everyday lives!
If you thought that this helped you, please comment on our Facebook Fan page, I eagerly await your comments....

Weekly Challenge: Improve your goal setting skills. Here is the formula to use to reach you goals: Focus X Discipline = Productivity
Many times we think we don't have enough discipline to reach our goals. Or maybe we just can't because we don't have enough $, time, skill, etc... I know I have felt that way in the past. Here is one of the possible cases with the formula above that I see happen very often.
Focus = .1; Discipline = 80; result is only 8% progress on the goal. Let me explain. I find when I speak with students and parents about reaching their goals that they don't have a very clear picture of the goal they want and the process to use to reach that goal. If this is the case then all the discipline in the world won't matter much. You will still struggle.
I work to gain as much focus and clarity on my goal and the process to reach that goal before using an discipline. Then it makes it much easier to reach my goal and avoid possible breakdowns in the process. Spend more time really thinking deeply about what you want and how you will get to your goal and you find it is a lot easier than just trying to force your way to your goal.
Challenge: Take one small goal that will take from one day to one week to accomplish. Take time to visualize and write out everything you will do to reach that goal and what is the goal exactly. Evaluate if this increased you Productivity. Let me know how it is working by commenting below.
P.S. Mind mapping is a great tool to use to help this process. If you have young children tell them a story about what you want them to do.

- WEEKLY CHALLENGE - Are you up to the challenge?
==================================
1. Never do something for a stranger. If a stranger does ask you to do something say, "Okay."* Then go get a grown-up a tell them right away.
2. Never get in a car, van, bus, or any vehicle with a stranger.
3. Never go in a stranger's home.
4. Never keep secrets with strangers or with adults other than your parents. If a stranger does ask you to keep a secret say, "Okay."* Then go get a grown-up a tell them right away.
*They say, "Okay" so the stranger doesn't feel threatened that the child will expose them and take action to stop them from telling.
4 ALWAYS
1. Always go to Mom or Dad right away with anything a stranger might asks you to do.
2. Always go to Mom or Dad right away when a stranger asks you to keep a secret.
3. Always go to Mom or Dad right away if a stranger does anything to you that doesn't feel right. You will never be in trouble. (This can be a good time to talk with your child about the private parts of his or her body. Make sure they know no one is allowed to touch those parts for any reason, even close friends or family members.)
4. Always go to Mom or Dad right away with anything that doesn't feel right.

Reviewing the Four Nevers & Always regularly and role-playing is key. If you just "know" these skills they are of little worth. They must become a true skill through practice or nervousness, embarrassment, and fear will be too great a barrier for your child to come to you. Lets keep all our karate kids in Aurora safe by sharing these tips with friends and family.
==================================
Of course if someone knows how to really trigger you with punches, kicks, and openings then give that a try. Make sure it is not so much that you get overwhelmed. It should be a real surprise and keep it fun!
Here is how you get a point: you don't get hit, you catch the high fives, or your make eye contact, say, "yes, Sir/Mama", and follow the command the first time without hesitation. Of course adjust for age.
Lastly, be sure to take other types attacks into account like asking your child to make their bed. Try this for the next week and see how it goes. I am excited to hear all our students and karate kids feedback in the comments below. Aurora should be alive with the sound of Ninja this week!

Pro MMA Coach Shawn Tompkins Shares his thoughts on Sensei Shoen's MMA Coach, Master Riccardo
Big MMA Seminar Updates:
- New Material - We will be continuing to integrate material from the seminar into classes.
- As a result of the seminar Coach Tompkins has invited Master Riccardo to go out to Las Vegas to hang with him and his team in March and also meet with the Tapout headquaters gym owners and share some of what has made his schools a success.
Instructors Corner

Simplicity is Strength
(Sensei Shoen here. Thought you guys might like this article from one of Master Riccardo's students who is now an instructor at one of his academies. It is good to know we are all part of a larger family.)
Let’s do a little thought experiment. Imagine two grapplers, of equal size, athletic ability, and previous experience, who both train consistently for one full year. Grappler #1 learns a new submission every month, so at the end of the year he has twelve finishing moves in his repertoire. Grappler #2, by contrast, trains only one submission throughout the whole year.
Now answer this question: all else being equal, when they face off at the end of the year, which of these grapplers has a better chance of winning the match?
Contrary to what you might assume, I maintain that grapplergrappler #1 may have learned a bunch of submissions, grappler #2 has mastered his one finishing move. He can perform his submission in nearly any given situation, from almost any position on the mat. His timing with his finish is impeccable, and he can set it up in ways that grappler #1 can’t even begin to imagine.
The reason for the second competitor’s likely victory is simplicity. Grappler #1 has overloaded his mind with a dozen different techniques, and while he understands them all intellectually, he has not had the time to ingrain each one into his game so that he can flow into it effortlessly and unthinkingly. He has complicated his style with multiple imperfect attacks. Grappler #2, on the other hand, has kept it simple by perfecting a single attack, and he knows that he can get that submission every time.
In competitions between elite-level black belts, the most successful submissions are basic chokes and joint locks that all white belts know. Likewise, the most common knock-outs at the pro MMA level come from simple punches that students learn in their first few months of training.
Now, I am not recommending that you become a ‘one-trick pony’. A fighter who has mastered two finishes is twice as dangerous as a fighter who has mastered one. But keep in mind what it means to master something. Before you try to complicate your game with a bunch of flashy moves, make sure you have perfected the fundamentals. You should know the basics so well that you can do them in your sleep.
Remember: keep it simple, and keep working on it. When you begin getting bored with a technique, you know you’re just about to start learning it.
