Thougths on Quote from BJJ greats Renzo Gracie and Royler Gracie.

"The essential idea behind Brazilian jiu-jitsu's answer to the fundamental problem of the martial arts is this: You must constantly strive to put yourself in a position where you can control your opponent as much as possible. Thus allowing you to do maximal damage to him while exposing yourself to as little potential damage as possible."

First let me say that this is said about a self-defense situation and not about just a match. One should always be careful about injuring someone else and using a reasonable level of force to defend yourself. Putting this aside, the question becomes how do you control someone who is bigger and stronger than you? The answer is by being able to work with the persons movement and force while using force on them in the most effective way possible. To this martial artists must use the laws of physics to their advantage. Here is one way to accomplish that. I hope to give some more in following weeks on our blog.

Don't be their when some goes to apply force to you. Traditional called only defend an unassailable position. For example, when someone goes to push you off the mount position, swim your arms through their push. This make the surface they are pushing on disappear. One of the mistakes I see people make with a move like this is to push the other persons arms out of the way. This makes it possible for the other person to resist or assail you back. Try to perform the move without touching their arms at all. While I do think that using you must waste energy because it is the best option at this point in the match the goal should be to avoid it at all costs because it only makes you vulnerable to the other person's counter attack.

Next lets look at the idea of constantly striving. This means working to always be in an unassailable position. For example, if the attacker cuts the angle for a jab or steps to the weak angle of a stance for a throw, you must move and adjust to make that attack ineffective. This is why you see BJJ expert level players always moving and adjusting their posture, position, and control to make any attack ineffective. By the way this is totally different than just moving away or out of range. The idea is to blend this strategy with the ability to always be in position to attack an indefensible position.

So here is how to work this into your training. First commit to working towards always being in an unassailable position. Forgot winning. Lose more to gain skill in this vital area.  Second, when you do get attacked and you see the other person had the position to attack effectively consider how you got into an assailable position. Usually, at this time we think, ok how do I get out of this attack or defend this attack". That is good to work on, but really it is already to late to work on being unassailable. Students spend years getting good at defending attacks and very little time putting effort into understanding how not to get attacked at all. This is why it is important to tap early and often. This gives you more time to fix the error that made it possible to attack you in the first place.

watch how easy it is to defeat a strong opponent.

BRING A BUDDY WEEK IS THIS April 11th to 15th - Invite your friends, family, co workers and neighbors to take class with you. This is a great way to get the ones you care about involved in training at Victory and gain all the benefits of regular training. We always count it a HONOR to meet anyone you bring...Thank You!

Weekly Challenge: For a real challenge think about how to use the ideas in the article above into your day to day life with family, friends, and at work? Keep track of the times you had a breakdown/you were attacked by others or just life and general. Then at the end of the day come up with a way to make that impossible in the future. Try this for the next week. You might make it a permanent habit. I know it makes a big difference for me.

Why does Discipline and Self-control work one day then not the next?
Understand this and you will change the way you use authority over your children.

I wrote this because of the many times I read about Discipline and Self-Control I only see one side of a two sided coin talked about.

Lets say your son or daughter will not go to bed. You ask and they say, "No way I have to finish this level on my video game." So you already know how to simply turn the TV off and help (pick them up) them up stairs. This can work well if you don't react to what they do or say and if you are consistent.

OK, so this is the first way and everyone should know about this already. But this should make you wonder about those kids who always seem happy to obey their parents. What in the world are they doing? Do you think they are really just gritting their teeth and exercising their self-control and discipline. My guess is NO!

So here is a second kind of authority or discipline. They are commanding obedance through serves. This is they way a great leader helps others. They serve them lovingly and with a joyfull heart. They help them meet their own needs and grow and in return the other person can't wait to be of serve back. This doesn't happen over night and the first type of discipline is still needed, but it is they way that works at 2 and 22 years old.

OK so how do you use this for your child. First ask yourself what is you level or rapport with your child. This will determine if your child wants to please you.
Grade yourself on the following quiz.

Answer T or F
My Child...
Doesn't act like they missed me when I come home.
Acts disgusted when I ask them to do simple things.
Only listens when I yell.
Constantly speaks disrespectfully to me.
Feels like they can do nothing right in my eyes.
Is secretive around me.
Accuses me of not listening.
Tells others they can't talk with me.
I don't enjoy my childs company.
I feel burned as a parent.

Scoring
0-1 True - Great work
2-4 True - Needs a little work
5+ True - Get to work

Here are some tips to help raise your score.
1. Say I love you
2. Show you love them
3. Keep your promises
4. Play together
5. Spead time together
6. Pray together
7. Have regular family meetings
8. Know their relating style (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic)

Weekly Challenge: Do three things this week to develop more rapport with the ones you love and see if you can command obedience this way.

P.S. If this isn't working right away give it time. It will and double down your efforts.

Why You Feel So Up & Down about Your Training.
If I only had one thing left to say about martial arts training - this would be it!

I wrote this because I have had so many discussions with students and instructors over the last several weeks and it has become my focus to drive this message home

Let me start of by saying that in my over 27 years training in the martial arts there has been many times I felt good & bad about my progress.
There is a reason for that, so let me explain...
Learning any new skill involves relatively brief spurts of progress, each of which is followed by a slight decline to a plateau somewhat higher in most cases than that which preceded it…the upward spurts vary; the plateaus have their own dips and rises along the way…
To take the master’s journey, you have to practice diligently, striving to hone your skills, to attain new levels of competence. But while doing so–and this is the inexorable–fact of the journey–you also have to be willing to spend most of your time on a plateau, to keep practicing even when you seem to be getting nowhere.
Notice in the diagram below, that the overall trend is upward in skill proficiency, however the plateau is the periods when you feel "down".
Important to see here is that if you would quit at the first plateau, there would be no growth.
Also, Right after the period of plateau there is a SPIKE in skill level!

This fact of devoting much of your time on plateaus or even backsliding may be frustrating or dispiriting if you are hellbent on bottom-line progress.

But the person on the path of mastery not only acknowledges the plateau, he embraces it and learns to love “practice” for its own sake and rewards. I think this advice can be of great help to those of us struggling with plateaus in the effort to get fit, lose weight, or advance mma training, kickboxing or grappling skills.
Mastery is not about reaching perfection, but rather comes from maintaining a particular mindset as you move along the path of improvement in building your skills or overcoming challenges in any endeavor.
I will try to write more on this subject and give you more insight on the "Mindset" we need to have about our training and how it will crossover and help in our everyday lives!

Weekly Challenge: Improve your goal setting skills. Here is the formula to use to reach you goals: Focus X Discipline = Productivity

Many times we think we don't have enough discipline to reach our goals. Or maybe we just can't because we don't have enough $, time, skill, etc... I know I have felt that way in the past. Here is one of the possible cases with the formula above that I see happen very often.

Focus = .1; Discipline = 80; result is only 8% progress on the goal. Let me explain. I find when I speak with students and parents about reaching their goals that they don't have a very clear picture of the goal they want and the process to use to reach that goal. If this is the case then all the discipline in the world won't matter much. You will still struggle.

I work to gain as much focus and clarity on my goal and the process to reach that goal before using an discipline. Then it makes it much easier to reach my goal and avoid possible breakdowns in the process. Spend more time really thinking deeply about what you want and how you will get to your goal and you find it is a lot easier than just trying to force your way to your goal.

Challenge: Take one small goal that will take from one day to one week to accomplish. Take time to visualize and write out everything you will do to reach that goal and what is the goal exactly. Evaluate if this increased you Productivity. Let me know how it is working by commenting below.

P.S. Mind mapping is a great tool to use to help this process. If you have young children tell them a story about what you want them to do.
