Thougths on Quote from BJJ greats Renzo Gracie and Royler Gracie.

"The essential idea behind Brazilian jiu-jitsu's answer to the fundamental problem of the martial arts is this: You must constantly strive to put yourself in a position where you can control your opponent as much as possible. Thus allowing you to do maximal damage to him while exposing yourself to as little potential damage as possible."

First let me say that this is said about a self-defense situation and not about just a match. One should always be careful about injuring someone else and using a reasonable level of force to defend yourself. Putting this aside, the question becomes how do you control someone who is bigger and stronger than you? The answer is by being able to work with the persons movement and force while using force on them in the most effective way possible. To this martial artists must use the laws of physics to their advantage. Here is one way to accomplish that. I hope to give some more in following weeks on our blog.

Don't be their when some goes to apply force to you. Traditional called only defend an unassailable position. For example, when someone goes to push you off the mount position, swim your arms through their push. This make the surface they are pushing on disappear. One of the mistakes I see people make with a move like this is to push the other persons arms out of the way. This makes it possible for the other person to resist or assail you back. Try to perform the move without touching their arms at all. While I do think that using you must waste energy because it is the best option at this point in the match the goal should be to avoid it at all costs because it only makes you vulnerable to the other person's counter attack.

Next lets look at the idea of constantly striving. This means working to always be in an unassailable position. For example, if the attacker cuts the angle for a jab or steps to the weak angle of a stance for a throw, you must move and adjust to make that attack ineffective. This is why you see BJJ expert level players always moving and adjusting their posture, position, and control to make any attack ineffective. By the way this is totally different than just moving away or out of range. The idea is to blend this strategy with the ability to always be in position to attack an indefensible position.

So here is how to work this into your training. First commit to working towards always being in an unassailable position. Forgot winning. Lose more to gain skill in this vital area.  Second, when you do get attacked and you see the other person had the position to attack effectively consider how you got into an assailable position. Usually, at this time we think, ok how do I get out of this attack or defend this attack". That is good to work on, but really it is already to late to work on being unassailable. Students spend years getting good at defending attacks and very little time putting effort into understanding how not to get attacked at all. This is why it is important to tap early and often. This gives you more time to fix the error that made it possible to attack you in the first place.

watch how easy it is to defeat a strong opponent.

BRING A BUDDY WEEK IS THIS April 11th to 15th - Invite your friends, family, co workers and neighbors to take class with you. This is a great way to get the ones you care about involved in training at Victory and gain all the benefits of regular training. We always count it a HONOR to meet anyone you bring...Thank You!

Weekly Challenge: For a real challenge think about how to use the ideas in the article above into your day to day life with family, friends, and at work? Keep track of the times you had a breakdown/you were attacked by others or just life and general. Then at the end of the day come up with a way to make that impossible in the future. Try this for the next week. You might make it a permanent habit. I know it makes a big difference for me.
