Check out this email from Master Paul Keller's original karate instructor to Papa Mike (a 9th degree black belt in Columbus Ohio).

Dear Mike,

We spent five days in Jamaica, so I was not able to reply to your e-mail before you visit Paul. There is definitely something I want you to tell him. In addition, all members of the ASKA should know this truth.

In an important historical occasion which took place in the late 1960s Nagamine and Chotoko Omine, Nagamine's best student, visited Dayton, Ohio. The Kensei wanted to see his son Takayoshi, and to assess what I had accomplished with Matsubayashi Karate in the United States. Omine called me and stated Nagamine desired my immediate attendance, together with two of my best students. The next day I went to Dayton, accompanied by Paul Keller and Walt Sapranov.

We met Nagamine and Omine in James K. Wax's dojo. We five changed into our karate uniforms. Nagamine wanted to examine Paul by comparing his forms to those of Omine. The two karatemen stood side by side, facing Nagamine. They performed all of the forms together, each kata  both by Nagamine's count, and without it. Their fierce, brilliant, powerful, and vivid presentation of Matsubayashi Karate  was an honor to see.

It was not possible to discern a difference between Paul and Omine, because a difference did not exist. They were equally perfect in every sense. In the history of Shorin-ryu karate this was a unique event because for the first time an American and an Okinawan, both high experts of karate, stood side by side demonstrating all the forms and the American was certainly as good as was the Okinawan and Nagamine acknowledge this fact by looking at me and nodding. This was the best and finest compliment I have ever received from Nagamine.

Such is the excellence of the founder of the American Shorin-ryu Karate Association.

Warmest personal regards,

Gary Tiktin, President
American Karate Federation

Simplified Bo Basics, What I Eat for Lunch (PH Diet Info)

Bo Basics - Blocking Set

What I eat for Lunch. Ph Diet Continued.

The Student Oath Expanded.

1. Honor is following the rules the first time with out hesitation. (We follow the rules with out thinking first so we aren't tempted to take the easy way out. For example you get up out of bed in the morning before the thought to hit the snooze button crosses your mind.)

2. Integrity is keep your promises. (We keep our promises at a minimum of 90% of the time. If we break a promise we apologize and ask what we can do to make it. For example you say you will be some where at 8:00 and you show up at 8:05. You then apologize and offer to make it up. If you are late more that 1 out of 10 times you will lose that person's trust and it going to be tough to work with them.)

3. Self-Control means we don't always do what we feel like, but we always do what is right. (For example you may feel like cheating on a test so you don't have to study, but instead you study and earn an "A".)

1. The look on your face. (If you are making a friend or stopping a bully the look on your face is going to make a big difference in you results.)

2. The sound of your voice. (A strong confident voice can help at work, school, play, and home.)

3. The Quality of your Technique. (You bring your personal best to everything you do including school, work, family so that your Black Belt Excellence always shows through.)

My thoughts on being healthy.

Just a reminder to our younger students that the three key to focus are:

1. Focus your Body - Holding absolutely still. (Ex: While doing my homework or playing a video game.

2. Focus your Eyes - Making Eye Contact. (Ex: While making a new friend.)

3. Focus your Mind - By asking yourself Questions. (Example: What is the teacher saying? Is my homework finished? Is my room clean enough for Sensei (Karate Instructor) to visit?

I would love to hear your feedback or questions. Just leave your comments below for everyone to see.

Lock Flow Sequence from Sensei Kautzman

Thought I might refresh everyone on the three key to Respect and some of my thoughts on the developing Respect and Discipline.

1. Make Eye Contact: When you make good eye contact it tells the other person that what they are saying is important to you. When you're speaking it lets them know that what you are saying is important too.

2. Say Yes, Sir and Yes, Ma'am: This helps us be clear with our promises and builds trust. It also makes it so you don't have to switch what you say all the time to different people. (yes Mom, yes Dad, yes Grandma, yes teacher, yes Ms. Smith, etc.)

3. Follow the Rules the first time without hesitation: This is key to developing the habit of doing what is right without think about it. When we think about doing homework or working out that is when we being to justify doing what we know is not right or best. Don't let your inner Ninja have anytime to trick you.

This pattern can be very helpful and I want to encourage all our Parents and Students to work on making this a habit and you will notice your discipline really start to improve.

Have these keys helped you or your children? Then post how and comment below.

Just got back from a great instructor training weapons seminar that the ASKA held.

Thankful Mr. Peter Lebas was kind enough to take this Saturday's classes. I hear he did a great job and had lots of fun. It reminds me of when I started teaching at 14. Thanks Mr. Lebas.

All the local ASKA (American Shorin Ryu Karate Association) schools were their including Master Jules Pommier, Sensei Karl Gruber, Sensei Bryan Kautzman, and of course me. We learned advanced bo and nunchaku fighting and applications. It was totally awesome. Remember at the next Black Belt testing Master Keller will be in town for some more ASKA sponsered seminars. I believe all students will be invited. Lets all be there!

Sincerely,
Scott Shoen

Karate Quote about Kata.

"Training in Kata is spiritual as well as physical. In his performance of the Kata, the Karateka exhibits humility, gentleness and a sense of decorum no less than boldness and confidence, thereby integrating mind and body through a singularly unique dicipline".

Blog Post from Master Paul Keller. Very cool!

Question from Blog:

Colleagues, I should like to begin exploring with you the concepts of “hard” and “soft.” I’ve been inspired by my recent training in Goju-ryu (which as you probably know means something like “Hard-soft style”), as well as some workouts with a Kung-fu stylist, to start thinking about the soft in our Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu. One of my Goju instructors keeps stressing the relaxation required in order to generate power, even in a straight zuki or a basic block. He says everything is ju until the moment of contact, and then it’s go, but only for that instant. The ju of some types of round blocks, such as mawashi-uke or hiki-uke, is obvious, if difficult to achieve. But the ju in our basic age-uke, yoko-uke, and geidan barai—or oi-zuki and gyaku-zuuki—is not so evident, especially if you have trained all of your karate life to execute these with “power,” which for most students up into lower dan levels means striking and blocking with a lot of tension everywhere in the body. I note, however, that when sensei Sindt (see the “Martial Arts Video Vault”) does his kata, all of that snap and power comes from his relaxation while executing the technique. Since many of our so-called “hard” techniques are best executed in a relaxed state, I wonder if we shouldn’t substitute other terms for “hard” and “soft,” such as “relaxed” and “tensed,” or “without effort” and “with effort.”
I anticipate your feedback.

Master Keller's Rresponse:

"I think that most experienced martial artists associate the term hard and soft, internal and external in the correct way. In my opinion, every system has to be relaxed and without tension to be effective. From my view, seeing circular motion in movement makes the most sense, even a bullet comes out spinning just like our punch. Better to talk in terms of muscular contraction, point of contact, and recovery position. The relevant muscles contract through the target zone. You wouldn't apply the brakes to slow a technique down, a golf swing, or any motion. What you get is follow through and recovery. A boxer hitting a speed bag is working in circular movements. A baseball swing is circular, but would be considered a hard strike on impact with the ball. From my view, all motion is best understood as relaxed, absent of tension, with good follow through depending on what you want to happen with the next shot and the one after that, etc.

"Shorin-ryu works better in medium to long range relative to Goju, which is far better for close-in fighting, a more realistic range for most fights; then you get into Jujitsu and the ground game, which is considered "soft". Like a baseball swing, elbow strikes, hooks and uppercuts are circular, hard on impact, recover circularly using more of a sanchin type stance, for an instance. To the recipient it will seem very "hard" indeed, but those techniques will look more like soft goju-ryu than hard style shorin-ryu. Seems a misnomer overall, like "hip dynamics" rather than full body dynamics."

Kata are very short 30 sec to a 1:30 at most and they clear your mind, help you focus, aid in relaxation, burn calories, and allow you to be more aware and present focused. That is a really good trade off compared to being bored out of your mind. I us these tips to help with my kata practice and it just makes it more fun to boot.

Have some other times to practice kata? Let me know and leave a comment.

Adult students feel free to grab a copy of his biograph (20th Century Samurai Richard Kim) from amazon.com.
